"We sold everything we had, we were left with nothing with the risk that if we were deported we would arrive back in Cuba with nothing, we would have lost everything," says a Cuban migrant in Miami who wishes to remain anonymous. In the year from December 2021 to 2022, border authorities recorded more than 227,000 instances of Cubans illegally entering US territory, the largest exodus in the Caribbean nation's history.
