Description
The conflict is raging on the outskirts of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine and Ukrainian helicopters can be seen providing air support firing on Russian positions. Ivan, a military ambulance driver says ‘the number of people we get can vary, it depends on the nature of the fighting. It can be 1-3 injured or 40 per day…’ as they pick up the body of a Ukrainian soldier. Inside the city, the sound of shelling is constant but volunteer groups bring water and food to the 8.000 inhabitants still living in the city. Here everybody has their reasons for staying. A pharmacist in a nearby humanitarian centre located in a boxing gym tells us she lost her son in the bombing of the Kramatorsk train station, two weeks before his 17th birthday. ‘After that I didn’t have any desire to go somewhere,’ Nataliia Yevtushenko says. At the centre, people can get warm, eat, watch the news and children can play video games and watch cartoons. The secretary of Bakhmut city council, who stopped by the centre, says 98 families with children still live in Bakhmut. ‘We know where they live but everyday we try to convince them to leave. That’s our job’, she explains. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES ARRANGED IN SEQUENCES
