Description
Joshimath residents watch tearfully as their homes fall apart in front of their eyes. This comes as authorities in one of the holiest towns in the Indian Himalayas started evacuating residents over the weekend after hundreds of houses began developing yawning cracks and sinking. The cause of the apparent subsidence in Joshimath in the northern state of Uttarakhand was unclear, but resident Mahadeep Singh Pawar blames the building of roads and tunnels for a nearby hydroelectric project. "How will we now live here in this house? We spent our life on this house," Bharti Devi laments. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
