Pope Francis is expected to land in South Sudan on Friday for a three-day visit, the first by a pope to the mostly Christian country since it achieved statehood in 2011. Since parting from Muslim-majority Sudan, South Sudan has been anything but peaceful, with civil war and ethnic bloodletting destroying any sense of the national unity heralded at independence.
