Thousands gather in the town of Lerwick on the Scottish island of Shetland on Tuesday night to celebrate the Up Helly Aa fire festival, with women taking part in squads for the first time. Members of the squads who took part in the event marched through the streets of Lerwick with lit torches, singing and chanting before setting fire to a galley. The 142-year-old festival, which attracts tourists from around the world, is celebrated on the last Tuesday of January.
