Description
Constant artillery exchanges, shelling, gunfire, drones buzzing in the sky. The everyday situation in Bakhmut is dire for the 7,000 people still living in the hotly contested city, which has seen most of its pre-war population of 75,000 leave. But those remaining wont't leave. People use a makeshift bridge to cross the river to get their daily reserves of water and logs, or to visit one of the several humanitarian centres, located in the city's west, providing hot meals, beverages and internet access, allowing them to stay in touch with loved ones. "Only a dummy wouldn't be afraid" says Nadiya Burdinska, "if God wants it, I'll stay alive". Earlier in the week, a shell hit a Ukrainian army car, killing several soldiers and leaving the snow bloodied. Servicemen are also digging trenches and building fortified positions outside the city as Russian forces continue to advance every day. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES ARRANGED IN SEQUENCES N°338B7H9
