Description
It grew from the wealth of tobacco, sugar and rum merchants, many with links to slavery, but now Glasgow, the Scottish city designed for working men, wants to give itself more of a female friendly touch. "One of the things I'm involved in is getting lighting put into our parks" says Holly Bruce, the councillor whose motion to have future projects take a feminist town planning approach was passed in October 2022, "I would like to see wider pavements. I'd like to see more street lighting". Bruce explains how cities were predominantly built by men and for men, and the motion that she passed in the City Chambers helps to change that. "Society has changed, the needs have changed, the composition of society itself has changed" says Rohinton Emmanuel, a professor in sustainable design and construction at Glasgow Caledonian University, "I think also, it is also good practice that we take into account all viewpoints and, sort of feminist planning is one part of it."
