Description
Russia's invasion has triggered a substantial reduction in corrupt practices in Ukraine and triggered a change in mentality, that's the assessment of Oleksandr Novikov, head of the country's National Agency on Corruption Prevention. Speaking during an interview with AFP, Novikov says "the level of corruption as significantly decreased in recent years" explaining that "in 2013, 27% of the population encountered corrupt practices, today it is 13%". Novikov believes that the initial shock of war caused corruption to virtually disappear, but as time passed certain people "probably forgot that the war was going on and returned to the old corrupt practices". Ukraine's war effort largely depends on EU and US support and, fearing the loss of this vital aid, the country is seeking to reassure its partners of its integrity. "People who use corrupt practices... are not just war criminals, but allies of the enemy" says Novikov. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
