The main road through the northern German village of Upahl is lined with a series of wooden placards and their bright neon letters. "Upahl says no", reads one. "Think of our children!" screams another. The signs are in opposition to the planned container centre for asylum seekers that should hold 400 people in the small town of 500 residents. "Due to the war in Ukraine and all the people who have come to us, plus the asylum seekers whose numbers have increased again in the last year, we have a situation that we can no longer cope with," says Tino Schomann.
