Description
Retired British General Sir Richard Barrons gives his assessment over Russia's invasion of Ukraine as the first anniversary of the 2022 invasion approaches. Sir Richard says that, while Russia is still "throwing thousands of young men to seize small amounts of Ukrainian territory," it is likely to gradually improve its tactics, and that a "strategic risk to the outcome of this war" for Ukraine is that Western nations are yet to fully mobilise their arms industries to produce in the country’s support.
On the leaders of the two nations, Sir Richard believes Volodymyr Zelensky has proved to be "one of the great, iconic wartime leaders of our time", while Vladimir Putin risks being increasingly blamed for Russian setbacks if they continue into a second year. Overall, he says the war has starkly defined a divide between authoritarian and democratic nations. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
