Description
The screech of chainsaws echoes through a Bosnian forest edged by snowy peaks, where the harvested lumber is set to be crafted into high-end furniture to adorn Belgian, French or South Korean living rooms. The Bosnian furniture industry's steady growth was punctuated with an unexpected boom during the Covid-19 pandemic as supply chains in China ground to a halt, resulting in, as a manager at one Bosnian furniture company says, "a new customer knocking on our door every month". It has proven to be a rare success story in the impoverished Balkan country that has been plagued by decades of economic malaise following a disastrous civil war in the 1990s. AFP visits the production lines of two such businesses, Artisan and Standard Furniture Factory, both of whom pride themselves on “quality and reasonable prices”. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
