Description
In the southern Turkish city of Antakya, several Syrian refugee families have set up a small camp near their homes, destroyed by the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria earlier this month, killing over 47,000 people. The families explain they’ve had to set up the camp by their own means, with some saying they've tried to leave for neighbouring provinces like many Antakya residents have already done, but were forced to return due to the high cost of living. "Everything is too expensive" says Um Ahmed, "so we are back here". Nearly four million Syrians have settled in Turkey since the start of the civil war, which has devastated swathes of the country over the past 12 years, killing nearly half a million people and displaced millions more.
