"We thought we were safe here" says Oksana Ostapenko, a resident of Velyka Vilshanytsia, near the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, after a deadly wave of Russian strikes killed five in the region. Included in the dead are Ostapenko's sister and two brothers-in law, who were celebrating a birthday just the night before. "No one know where it's calmer" she adds, standing in front of a destroyed house. Images show the village's residents, surrounded by rubble, digging through the wreckage and moving the dead. Kyiv has claimed it shot down nearly half the missiles launched by Russian over at least 10 regions, as Moscow says the barrage of strikes was in response to a border incursion by Ukraine earlier this month.
