Description
"It's extraordinary to find the missing woman from a family portrait" says Andrea Rygg Karberg, the director of the Danish Nivaagaard museum, after painstaking detective work finally found the mother in a 17th-century Flemish family portrait by the painter Cornelis de Vos and have been able to reunite the opulent household under one roof. The "Portrait of a Lady" had been acquired at auction in 2014 by a Dutch gallery owner, Salomon Lilian, who had undertaken restoration work that revealed a country background. Seeing a photo of the work after cleaning, researcher Jørgen Wadum realised that it was the missing mother. "Like a puzzle, it fits perfectly with our work" enthuses Rygg Karberg. The work of the researchers determined that the painting was complete until 1830. The first mention of the single "Portrait of a Father and Son" is in 1859, which suggests that it was cut out in the meantime. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
