Bombed by artillery and more recently by air strikes, Avdiivka is another "fortress" of Donbas that Moscow's forces, along with pro-Russian separatists, are trying to encircle, like its neighbour Bakhmut, 60 kilometres further north. "Every day is the same with these bombs and missiles," which sometimes kill and injure people, says Nadezhda, 70, as she passes in front of the still smouldering side of a long, empty 15-storey block of flats, hit the day before by a Russian strike.
