Description
Burnt vehicles on roadsides, slogans of the Gulf Clan cartel written on walls and military trucks patrolling the streets are a common occurrence in Bajo Cauca, northwestern Colombia, since illegal miners started protests over 20 days ago. The miners have been protesting the government's destruction of the heavy machinery they use to dredge up soil to find gold. Miners have shut down roads, and attacked a town hall and a bank in the area. President Gustavo Petro accuses the Gulf Clan of being behind the attacks, and has suspended a truce with the drug cartel. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
