Description
Faced with a shortage of skilled labour and the challenge of its green overhaul, steelmaker ArcelorMittal is seeking to train more and more young people and to retain them, recruiting some from as far away as the French island of La Réunion. Every year, around fifty new apprentices arrive in Eisenhüttenstadt, a small working-class town in eastern Germany. After their training, most of them are offered a permanent position among the 2,700 or so employees on the site. "We are facing very significant technological changes" explains Reiner Blaschek, the CEO of ArcelorMittal, "this means that we will also have to adapt our training... and we have to do it in time". For Steven Maillot, who travelled from Reunion, the apprenticeship offers more "in terms of my future, my career." IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
