Description
Laine Carolyn, who lives near the US capital in the state of Virginia, owes more than $10,000 in rent to the company managing her apartment building and now faces eviction from her home. Declining health due to a chronic illness last year left her unable to work and without regular income to pay her bills. "There is anger, there is frustration, there is guilt and even some shame that I probably shouldn’t be taking on, because I really can’t control this," she says. Her story is one of many; there has been a steady increase in eviction filings over the last year, and nationwide numbers are now close to where they were before the pandemic.
