Description
In flood hit Bentiu city in South Sudan, water hyacinths are are proving an unlikely source of fuel as climate change reshapes the landscape. Hyacinth is gathered near the water's edge, dried under the sun, the stalks are placed in a sealed metal drum and smoldered over a fire for about 20 minutes, then mixed with sand, and water into a paste and shaped into briquettes. "WFP has been running a project where we use the invasive water hyacinth that chokes the water ways to make a type of cooking fuel to reduce the consumption of wood based charcoal" explains the World Food Programme's head of communications in South Sudan.
