Description
Delegations for the G7 Climate, Energy and Environment meeting, which was held at weekend in the northern city of Sapporo, visit Upopoy National Ainu Museum and Park to learn the tradition and culture of Ainu, a Japanese indigenous people.
In 1869, Japan's imperial government annexed Ainu lands, and the Ainu were forced to abandon traditional hunting practices, speak Japanese and take Japanese names. In 2008, Japan's parliament passed a resolution to recognise the Ainu as an Indigenous people, and the massive Upopoy National Ainu Museum and Park in Shiraoi, Hokkaido, opened as a "symbolic space for ethnic harmony" in 2020.
