Description
"Our granaries are full and we don't see a market right now" says Danka Marincheshka, a Bulgarian farmer who, like many others in the country, says the influx of cheaper Ukraine goods is causing prices to drop and saturating demand, leaving them unable to sell their own produce. This concern is shared across a number of Ukraine's neighbours, including -- addition to Bulgaria -- Poland, Hungary and Slovakia, all of which have in the past week issued temporary bans on the import of grains from the war-stricken country. The decision of these eastern EU states follows protests by domestic farmers. Taking some of the focus off Ukrainian products, Nikolay Valkanov, an analyst from the InteliAgro think-tank, says that Bulgarian farmers fell prey to their own unrealistic expectations that prices would keep rising, which "saw them withholding production and not selling" as they waited for price increases that never came.
