Description
At the coronation of Charles III a specially-made screen will shield the king from view during what is considered the most sacred part of the ceremony: the anointing of the monarch with holy oil by the Archbishop of Canterbury, on the hands, breast and head. A new screen has been made for the coronation of King Charles, with a design based on a window at the Chapel Royal of St James's Palace in London, itself created to mark the 2002 Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. Both window and screen feature a tree motif, with the leaves labelled with names of Commonwealth countries, and the monarch's insignia at its root. The screen, which has received a blessing at the Chapel Royal, was designed by Aiden Hart and embroidered by the Royal School of Needlework. Its wooden framework, designed and made by Nick Gutfreund of the Worshipful Company of Carpenters, uses wood from a windblown tree which came down on the Windsor estate, originally planted by the Duke of Northumberland in 1765.
