Heiroklian was a flourishing settlement before ethnic violence between the majority Meitei people, who are mostly Hindus, and the mainly Christian Kuki tribe rocked the hilly northeast state bordering Myanmar. At least 54 people have reportedly been killed and around 23,000 have fled their homes for the safety of Indian Army-run ad-hoc refugee camps.
