Description
Four years after his "Ibiza-gate" sting operation brought down the Austrian government, Julian Hessenthaler is fresh out of jail and speaking out. The 42-year-old tells AFP that he would engineer the sting again "without hesitation" but says "not much has been learnt" from the revelations, as Austria's far-right Freedom Party (FPOe) surges in the polls. The 2019 scandal revealed the then FPOe leader, Heinz-Christian Strache, promising state contracts in exchange for election campaign support, in a video covertly filmed in Ibiza two years earlier. Hessenthaler, the private detective behind the sting who now divides public opinion, was jailed in 2021 for trafficking cocaine and possessing forged documents. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
