Description
Veterans and members of the public in the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan mark the USSR's defeat of Nazi Germany with a commemorative parade in the capital, Bishkek. In stark contrast to parades in Russia, however, where many justitified Russia's ongoing offensive in Ukraine by drawing parallels to World War II, the Kyrgyz attendees and celebrants that speak to AFP call for peace. "People flee from the territory of Ukraine because of war," says Asek Urmanbetov, a 100-year-old WWII veteran. "Therefore... I wish peace for everyone on Earth. "The event comes as Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov celebrated Victory Day in Moscow with the leaders of several other former Soviet republics, including from Central Asia. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
