Lebanese security forces desperate for cash are moonlighting and deserting as they struggle in the face of a brutal economic crisis in the fragile country, adding to fears of a potential security collapse. In regular times, moonlighting or deserting the army can be punishable by imprisonment, but now "the army turns a blind eye" to those working other jobs, "because if not, everybody would quit," says Samer, a soldier who also works in a garage with his uncle in the northern city of Tripoli.
