Description
The Swiss Islamic scholar, Tariq Ramadan, leaves Geneva criminal court on the first day of his trial for "rape and sexual coercion". The 60-year-old former Oxford University professor denies the allegations. "He has been attacking her for five years, calling her a liar, she has had admirable courage for five years, and we still don't understand why she would have invented these accusations, unless it is the truth" says Robert Assael, the complainant's lawyer, speaking to the press outside the court. "There are witnesses in this case, psychiatrists, who she consulted immediately afterwards and who took notes at the time of what they were told. They noted post-traumatic stress, and you can't lie about this kind of symptom" he adds. Ramadan faces two to 10 years in prison if convicted on the charges. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
