Description
Amnesty International death penalty expert Chiara Sangiorgio reports a 53% increase on the previous 12 months in the global number of executions, as the organisation releases its annual report into the state of death penalty worldwide. "It is the highest figure that we recorded since 2017." The cause: increases in Iran and Saudi Arabia, where the death penalty is used as a "tool" to punish opponants in the hands of the authorities. She adds that China is still the world's "lead executioner", although it is very difficult to know the figures. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
