Description
The boys wear secondhand helmets and their guns can't kill, but the war they play, or fight in, on a verdant Ukrainian field is real for them and carries serious consequences. Over a year into Russia's invasion, the fighting has seeped into Ukrainian children's games and worldviews, impacting them in ways they will carry forever. 10-year-old Maksym, whose father died in the war, says that he sees Russians as his "worst enemies", and explains that the military games he plays with his friends serve as preparation for the future: "so that when I grow up and become a soldier, I can understand it". One of Maksym's friends, or comrades, is Andriy, who "would volunteer for the army right now if I could."
