Description
Construction work has resumed at the Bakhsh Abad Dam in Afghanistan's Farah province, neighbouring Iran. The irrigation project, launched under the previous government, was suspended due to the deteriorating security situation during the war. Once finished, the dam can generate 27 megawatts of electricity.
Irrigation is a major issue in Afghanistan as the country is frequently hit by droughts.
The Iranian government had warned that it "reserves" the right to take action as a dispute with Afghanistan escalates over the upstream Helmand River dam that restricts the flow of water into the country. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
