Description
Cast members of new HBO series 'The Idol' hold a press conference at the Cannes film festival, with star Lily-Rose Depp denying reports of behind the scenes drama, and co-creator Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye saying he wanted the show to be "a dark twisted fairytale" about the music industry. The show sees Depp play a pop phenomenon dealing with mental health issues who falls into the grip of The Weeknd’s character Tedros, who acts as a controlling and sinister influence on the starlet. The show has gained some notoriety over its sexually-explicit content and its use of nudity, with Depp saying the "bareness of the character physically mirrors the bareness that we get to see emotionally." Journalists at the press conference asked if the career of Britney Spears had served as inspiration, but director Sam Levinson says, "We're not trying to tell a story about any particular pop star... We're looking more at how the world perceives a pop star and the pressure that it puts on that individual." IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
