Description
Residents of Freetown stand and watch as a centuries-old, towering tree that served as a historic symbol in Sierra Leone is felled after being damaged a storm. According to legend, slaves who won their freedom fighting on the British side of the American War of Independence prayed under the tree when they arrived in West Africa. "Yesterday we experienced the end of this wonderful and historic moment" says the Chief Administrator Freetown City Council, Festus Kallay. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
