Students from a military academy and members of the general public visit the new exhibition in Moscow by patriotic artist Vasily Nesterenko entitled "We are Russians, God is with us", which harks back to the realist tradition from Tsarist and Soviet times, with images depicting mostly battle scenes intended to promote support for Russia's campaign in Ukraine. "My historical military paintings are well-meaning, optimistic, they do not show the bleakness, the darkness like the works of Goya," says Nesterenko, a defender of classical European painting which he says is under threat, an argument which is frequently made by Russian officials who talk about the 'decadence' of Western culture.
