At night, French border police search the pitch dark sea for "kwassa kwassa", small motor boats used by illegal migrants to cross into Mayotte from the Comoros. They find a boat with 11 migrants on board, including two needing medical attention and two people smugglers. On average, two boats are detected every day in Mayotte's territorial waters, and in 2022, 571 were intercepted at sea, carrying 8,003 illegal immigrants. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
