"They are obviously trying to present things differently from what actually happened," says former Suriname President Desi Bouterse after an appeal hearing in Paramaribo, where the South American country's attorney general again called for the ex-leader's conviction in the killing of 15 opposition members in 1982. The 77-year-old had already been sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2019, but he has been challenging that verdict and under Surinamese law cannot be arrested before he exhausts the appeals processes.
