Description
Mykhailo Soboliev, a young protester in Kyiv has sprayed red paint over a plaque portraying Mikhail Bulgakov, the author of "The Master and Margarita", as the war hastens moves to "cancel" Russian culture. Originally the plaque was written in Russian and called Bulgakov a "Russian, Soviet writer". The plaque was replaced this month with a new inscription in Ukrainian calling him a "prominent Kyiv resident, doctor and writer" - which has attracted the ire of some Ukrainians given the disparaging comments about Ukraine's language and culture and its struggle for independence Bulgakov made in his work. "I don't think Bulgakov's place is in Kyiv. The same goes for the Bulgakov Museum", says Mykhailo. The museum's director, Lyudmyla Gubianuri, disagrees, arguing that it is not possible to "sanitise" history. "To only prohibit, discard, close down, destroy it... these are not the methods of a free country," she adds. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES ARRANGED IN SEQUENCES
