Description
In the streets of Dakar, residents react to the sentencing of opposition politician Ousmane Sonko to two years in prison for "corrupting young people". The opposition politician was accused of rape and making death threats against an employee of a beauty salon where he was due to receive a massage between 2020 and 2021. The court acquitted Ousmane Sonko of the charges of rape and death threats. "Since the beginning of this story, we have lost a great deal. The country's economy has taken a big hit" says one shopkeeper, adding "every time there's a hearing, all the traders are forced to close their shops for two or three days". "The Senegalese people are not fooled. We know that the state wants to prevent an opponent from standing in the presidential election" says another man. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
