Hong Kong was the one place in China where large-scale commemorations for those who died in Beijing's 1989 Tiananmen crackdown could be held. But since Beijing imposed a national security law on the city to quash dissent in 2020, public memories of the incident have been largely erased by authorities with public mourning suppressed, a museum shuttered and several monuments removed from universities.
