Description
Over 400 metres deep within the Finnish bedrock, what is soon to become the world's deadliest tomb: the Onkalo repository nears completion. The underground facility, that started its construction in 2004, is designed to house a total of 6,500 tonnes of uranium, covering the spent fuel from Finland's five nuclear power plant units. "Onkalo will be the world's first spent nuclear fuel disposal facility," says geologist Johanna Hansen, Onkalo's research and development coordinator. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
