Description
At the edge of an oasis swallowed by dunes, the desert is dotted with holes. The Nigerian Sahara is known for its uranium and gold rush, but in Bilma, in the north-east of Niger, the sand conceals another wealth: a salt prized for its quality. The salt pans of Kalala were once an essential stage of the caravan routes. Now the once flourishing trade seeks to survive in a troubled regional economy.
