Description
People fleeing from flooded areas in southern Ukraine receive help in Kherson days after the nearby Kakhovka dam was breached, leaving 600 square kilometres of the region underwater. "The water was rising very fast" says Volodymyr, a 73-year-old evacuee whose daughter was left behind. "It submerged everything" he adds, "the water went through a hole to the kitchen, from the kitchen to the veranda". Russia and Ukraine have traded blame for the dam's destruction, and on Thursday accused each other of shelling rescuers and evacuees. Thousands have been forced to flee their homes and NGOs have warned that humanitarian and environmental crises could arise following the dam's collapse. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
