Description
Residents of the Kyrgyz capital gather around boreholes with plastic bottles, one of the only ways for them to get water after a dry start to summer. Laundress Kanychai Bakirova says that tap water only runs at her house for a few hours a day. Bishkek authorities have introduced water supply restrictions, including nightly cutoffs, as groundwater levels in Bishkek have dropped 15-20 meters from last year, according to the technical director of the water distribution operator in Bishkek, Kadyrbek Otorov, and temperatures are already climbing to 40°C. While drought notoriously affects the rural areas of Kyrgyzstan, it is now the capital of this Central Asian country that is impacted. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
