Description
On the white beaches of Damas Island in northern Chile, where tourists used to enjoy its rich ecosystem, today only sanitary brigades dressed in biosecurity suits can be seen, searching for dead animals. Fear of the avian flu forced the closure of the Humboldt Penguin National Reserve in the Coquimbo region which is home to 56% of the breeding pairs of this species endemic to Chile and Peru.
