Description
Hundreds of Peruvians climb the slopes of Mount Sinakara to pay homage to the Lord of the Qoyllur Rit'i (Star of the Lord of the Snow) at an altitude of 4,700 metres in the Vilcanota mountain range, some 1,000 kilometres south-east of Lima. During this religious festival, which dates back to the 18th century, pilgrims returned to their communities carrying large blocks of ice on their shoulders to symbolically irrigate their lands with the sacred frozen water. However, as the Andean glaciers are shrinking, 'what you see now are pieces of rock that were once frozen,' regrets Javier Garmendia, custodian of the tradition for 20 years. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
