In the communities of Bushushu and Nyamukubi, in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, there is almost nothing left after the devastating floods and landslides in May. It’s hard to imagine that a little over a month ago, under the debris, rocks, and mud there were villages. Now those who survived are desperate for aid, which it seems is not going to the right people. “Members of the committees in charge of managing this crisis, found it an opportunity to get rich on the backs of disaster victims,” says Eric Dunia, a lawyer looking into allegations of fraud on behalf of a parliamentarian.
