Description
Sri Lanka customs authorities destroy 203 million smuggled cigarettes worth an estimated $50 million following their biggest single bust of illegally imported tobacco products.
The cigarettes were dumped into a garbage pit that fuels a waste-to-power electricity generator at Kerawalapitiya, just outside the capital Colombo on Thursday.
A customs spokesman said the fags were seized earlier this month after being imported from Dubai and the 21 containers carried brands from Turkey, Europe and the United States.
Authorities fined the importer 2.6 million rupees ($8,600), a customs spokesman said.
