Description
Danish farmer Lars Jonsson doesn’t really remember the last time he saw the rain. Maybe it was mid-April, and since then the 62- year-old worries. "It's very dry here in Denmark right now and I can see it on my barley field" he says, pointing out the lack of growth. In June, almost 90 percent of Denmark suffers from drought according to EU institute 'Copernicus' and the temperatures are higher than normal. "In the evening while I'm sitting on my terrace, it is very nice" says Jonsson, "but when I go here during daytime and look at the field and my barley, I’m a little bit worried". It's uncommon in the Nordic country to see long periods without precipitation, but these have been more frequent as an effect of climate change, suggest climatologists. Last month was the driest May in 15 years. Early June, in Copenhagen, the area’s utility company, HOFOR, urged people to reduce their water usage. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
