Description
The residents of Etretat, a town in Normandy whose population increases tenfold in the summer, are condemning the effects of 'overtourism', which despite some economic benefits is depriving local people of their town and damaging its natural heritage. "In ten years, we've lost a third of our residents", laments Shaï Mallet, co-president of the Etretat Demain association, a "flight" caused by "nuisance", "rising prices and the difficulty of finding accommodation". For Quentin Maze, this mass tourism is making the situation "complicated". "People come with their picnics, leave their rubbish behind and damage the site" says the 35-year-old Etretat-born sailor.
