Description
Thursday June 22 2023 is the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the Empire Windrush ship at Tilbury docks in England, which brought hundreds of Caribbean citizens from the British Commonwealth to their "mother country" in what would be the start of a large wave of migration. To mark the milestone, a new children's book is being published about the lives of some of those migrants. "Windrush Wonders" is illustrated by artist Kenya Josiah, whose studio is still beneath the Finsbury Park hair salon founded by her grandmother Cislin Parry, herself a member of the Windrush generation. Kenya says she hopes the book will help children of Afro-Caribbean descent learn about their heritage, and set out a more positive message about the Windrush after the so-called "Windrush scandal" which saw arrivals being deported by the British government for lacking paperwork decades after their arrival, despite the fact that no papers were needed at the time of their arrival.
