Description
"Metro", a Canadian living in Vancouver, has set up a Facebook group called "Dumpster Diving in Metro Vancouver". He has more than 2,000 followers and organises meetings where he distributes free food that has passed its sell-by date and has been thrown away by food importers. For each distribution, there are usually around 30 people who come to receive food. There's nothing illegal about the process, as the dumpsters are considered to belong to the public domain in Canada. According to a report by the province's health services, one household in ten in Vancouver is struggling with food insecurity. But the province's health agency warns that these products could also come into contact with chemical contaminants, so they could be dangerous. It is calling on people to get in touch with food banks. According to Statistics Canada, the price of food rose by 11.4% in September 2022, its highest increase in 42 years. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
